Garcon Saigon, Star Street Area

Nov 9, 2017

In my favourite area of Hong Kong, Garcon Saigon is a wonderful restaurant, which defines itself as a Vietnamese brasserie. When we’ve been in September, it was still very hot in Hong Kong and it was very pleasant to be seated in the restaurant with open windows, directly watching the animation of Star Street district.

Even if you have the French component, the menu is clearly #Vietnamese (ok you have some dishes such as bavette steak of pork collar …). We decided to order several traditional dishes and to share many. A mandatory stop was the ‘Bia Saigon Lager‘ as an aperitif with A. and K.

One of the favourite dishes of K. in Vietnamese restaurants is always the papaya salad, so we ordered one which comes with rice paper, beef jerky, shrimp crisp, cashew nuts and a spicy tamarind vinaigrette.

The second dish is a banh xeo, a kind of big crepe stuffed with good things (chorizo, prawns, bean sprouts, lettuce, herbs and nuoc nam dipping again) and is presented very nicely.

We also had ‘fried spring rolls cha gio with lettuce, fresh herbs and nuoc mam dipping sauce’, and some hedgehog mushrooms (yes, we needed one healthy and only-vegetable dish to feel #healthy).

As you can expect in French brasserie style, there was too much noise (which is typical!) and Frenchy marble tables. The restaurant is super well decorated and has this intimate touch of the Parisian nights. The bill was surprisingly quite good for all we had (I think I forgot one or two dishes) and we had a very cool dinner.

Adjoining room, you have ‘Le Petit Saigon’ which serves Banh Mi thit. Don’t forget to book in advance as it is very popular!.
